Lies, damned lies and statistics...!

Updated: Mar 8

Yes, you got me!. I am referring to the famous quote. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."; it was popularised in the United States by Mark Twain

(source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies,_damned_lies,_and_statistics) .

Though the quote refers- statistics as something worst than damned lies, I would like to highlight that we use it on a daily basis knowingly or unknowingly.

Like when we say - on an average how often you feel hungry ? We are actually considering the term "average" which is from Statistics.

If someone asks you - how many breads do you eat in a day--you would answer -on an average number X.

So it is a part of our life and we can say with confidence that they are not damned lies ..unless and until we know how we are using them -- in other words what purpose we want to achieve using it.

In machine learning statistics plays a very important role and it is used very heavily.

Some of the statistic terms MEAN,MEDIAN,and s oon are used regularly in different algorithms.

It is fun using these concepts.
